Flat tyre on a UAE road: what to do and what not to do
Abu Dhabi Police renewed their warning on 7 August 2026 about drivers stopping suddenly on the road. A video released that day showed chain-reaction collisions caused by vehicles stopping in live traffic. Police said stopping for a tyre problem or any other emergency is dangerous to other road users.
What police advise
- If possible, keep driving to the nearest exit or a safe spot rather than stopping in a live lane.
- If the vehicle cannot move, call 999 to reach the Command and Control Centre.
- Stay fully focused so you can react calmly if something goes wrong.
In earlier campaign guidance on breakdowns, Abu Dhabi Police said to move off the road when possible, use the right shoulder only if absolutely necessary, and place warning signs before heading to the nearest safe exit.
Reported penalties
- Stopping in the middle of the road without justification: Dh1,000 and 6 black points (Article 56).
- Obstructing traffic: a separate Dh500 fine (Article 98).
These figures come from an Abu Dhabi Police road-safety campaign in 2025. Dubai Police have reported the same Dh1,000 and six black points for stopping in the middle of the road.
