A traffic penalty does not automatically mean handing your car keys over to a police towing crew. Drivers facing vehicle seizure in Dubai or Abu Dhabi can request permission to keep the vehicle parked on their private property for the duration of the sanction instead of leaving it in a government storage yard.
Major traffic infractions carry strict impoundment periods across the Emirates. Failing to maintain a safe distance between vehicles results in a 30-day impoundment, while pulling onto a road without ensuring the way is clear carries a 14-day impoundment. Dubai Police also seized 497 vehicles in the first six months of the year strictly over accumulated unpaid traffic fines. The smart impound service provides an alternative for motorists who prefer keeping their vehicle on private property while serving out these penalties.
Dubai Smart Impound Rules and Fees
Dubai Police require all outstanding traffic fines on a vehicle file to be cleared in full before approving a home impoundment application. The standard cost is AED 420, which covers a Dh400 service fee and Dh20 in knowledge and innovation fees. If the impoundment period gets extended beyond the original timeline, an additional fee of AED 100 applies per extra month.
Once approved, the vehicle must be driven to the General Department of Traffic, where technicians fit a GPS-enabled electronic tracker inside the car. The device links directly to a live map inside the Dubai Police command room. If anyone attempts to start or move the vehicle away from the approved private location listed on the impoundment form, the system immediately trips an automated alert to monitoring officers.
Abu Dhabi Smart Impound Setup
Abu Dhabi Police run their home impoundment system through the digital TAMM platform. The service allows vehicle owners to select their home or another approved location to store the car for the entire penalty period.
After completing the digital request, an electronic tracking unit is fitted to the vehicle. The unit maintains continuous communication with the Abu Dhabi Police monitoring center. Any unauthorized movement from the designated parking spot or breach of the service conditions immediately triggers a notification to traffic authorities.
How to Apply for Smart Impoundment
- Clear Outstanding Fines: Pay all pending traffic tickets registered against the vehicle file.
- Submit the Application: Motorists in Dubai can apply through the official Dubai Police app or portal by entering their traffic file number, license number, plate details, or ticket number under Traffic Services. Abu Dhabi residents must sign in to the TAMM platform (tamm.abudhabi) and select Smart Impound under Traffic Services.
- Pay Required Charges: Complete payment online using a debit or credit card.
- Save Your Tracking Reference: Keep the transaction number or reference number delivered via SMS and email to check your request status online.
- Schedule Device Installation: Bring the vehicle in to have police technicians attach the GPS tracking unit before parking the car at your designated private address.
