2032 Target Confirmed as Emirates Begins Phased Shift to Dubai South
Dubai South is preparing for a multi-stage operational realignment as Emirates confirms its long-term move to Dubai World Central (DWC) remains on track for 2032. Speaking at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, Emirates Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer Adnan Kazim confirmed that Dubai South and the airport development teams are maintaining their investment trajectory toward the target date.
Engineering and Cargo Lead the Phased Shift to Dubai South
The transition is starting on the ground with heavy infrastructure rather than an immediate passenger switch. A $5.1 billion engineering complex is under development at Dubai South to house maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities alongside a dedicated mega hub for Emirates SkyCargo.
While passenger operations will eventually migrate, no firm timetable has been established for transferring consumer flights away from Dubai International (DXB). In the immediate term, local travel flows remain focused on existing routes, where over half a million arriving passengers landed in the second half of August alone, driven in part by UAE residents returning home ahead of the school year.
Emirates currently operates at roughly 93 per cent of its pre-disruption capacity while building out its future infrastructure at DWC.
