5 Major Shifts Coming to UAE Traffic Rules on January 1, 2027
Big changes are rolling onto UAE roads. Set to shake up how residents drive, ride, and register vehicles, a sweeping overhaul arrives on January 1, 2027, backed by Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026 and Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024. Whether you’re eyeing a third car, commuting on an e-scooter, or due for a licence renewal, here is what is shifting.
1. You can register up to five cars, if you are willing to pay extra
The standard provision allows individual residents to own two vehicles. If you want to expand your garage, you can register up to five vehicles in your name, but anything past two comes with an extra fee for each additional car. Keep in mind that right-hand-drive vehicles are strictly barred from road use (though display is fine), and any ride that fails basic road safety checks won’t get licensed. These ownership limits apply solely to individuals; the rules do not place an equivalent cap on company vehicle registrations.2. E-scooter riders face a 15-year age minimum
That electric scooter or bike is about to require some paperwork. Riders must be at least 15 years old to secure a permit for personal mobility devices, which cover six distinct categories ranging from bicycles and skateboards to electric scooters and mobility devices for elderly or disabled residents. Permits stay valid for three years before renewal. Your ride also needs proper gear to stay legal, including front lights, rear red braking lights, an audible warning device, a rear-wheel brake, and roadworthy tyres.3. A nine-hour daily driving ceiling
Marathon road trips just hit a regulatory wall. Drivers face a hard cap of nine hours behind the wheel within any 24-hour window. The rule applies broadly to motorists rather than just professional truck drivers or delivery workers. Furthermore, safety trumps the clock: if fatigue or exhaustion kicks in, you are legally required to stop driving immediately, even if you haven’t hit the nine-hour mark yet. While the Federal Traffic Council holds the power to amend this limit, the regulations leave the exact monitoring methods and rest-break requirements unstated.4. Licence validity periods get a complete restructure
How long your plastic card stays valid depends heavily on your age, nationality, and residency status. Drivers under 21 get a one-year temporary licence that is renewable for another year. First-time applicants aged 21 or older start with a two-year licence. Once qualified and renewing, UAE and GCC nationals secure a ten-year licence, while expatriate residents lock in a five-year validity period.5. Two-year vehicle registration for eligible cars
Standard vehicle registration has traditionally run on a strict one-year cycle. Under the upcoming framework, eligible car owners gain the option to secure a two-year vehicle registration, cutting down the annual trip to sort out paperwork.Loading more…
