New DXB Security Scanners: What Changes at the Checkpoint

Dubai Airports is gradually replacing its older security machines at Dubai International (DXB) with new technology. Where the new machines are in use, passengers do not need to take liquids or laptops out of their bags. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths has said the same applies to shoes and belts, describing taking them off as something that will become a thing of the past.

How the rollout works

• The security screening machinery is supplied by Smiths Detection under a contract awarded by Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects in May 2025, covering all three DXB terminals.
• Mr Griffiths describes it as a gradual, ongoing programme of continuous upgrade, with some machines already installed. Reports did not give a total number of machines or say which lanes already have them.
• Terminals are being refurbished alongside, with new flooring and extra security lanes in places such as Terminal 1.

What to do at the checkpoint

1. Follow the signs and the staff instructions at your lane, because not every lane has the new machines yet.
2. If your lane still uses older machines, take out laptops and liquids as before.
3. Do not assume the same rules apply at other airports on your route, including your connecting airport.
