Dubai’s Tallest Skyscrapers and the Towers That Defined the Skyline

Dubai’s skyline was built on purpose. From the late 1990s, landmark towers such as Emirates Towers and Burj Al Arab told investors, tourists and companies that the city could build at a scale few places match, and districts grew around each icon. Here are the tallest completed buildings and the landmarks that came first.

Dubai’s tallest buildings

Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa opened on 4 January 2010 and has been the world’s tallest building since. Its observation decks sit on levels 124 and 125 (At the Top) and on level 148 (At the Top SKY), one of the highest viewing platforms in the world. It anchors Downtown Dubai, alongside Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain.

Emirates Towers

Emirates Towers is a twin-tower development on Sheikh Zayed Road in the financial district. One tower is offices only, the other houses the Jumeirah Emirates Towers hotel, and a two-storey retail complex called Boulevard links them. It helped establish the corridor that grew into Dubai’s financial and business centre.

Burj Al Arab

The sail-shaped Burj Al Arab opened in 1999 and put Jumeirah on the global luxury tourism map. At about 321 metres it stands on an artificial island roughly 280 metres from the shore, joined to the mainland by a private bridge. It concentrates high-spending visitors, which supports hospitality, retail and dining nearby.

Why height became strategy
