Dubai Medical Visa: How It Works Today and What the Smart Visa Plan Changes
If you are travelling to Dubai for treatment, there is a medical visa you can use now. In June 2026 Dubai also announced a plan to make it smarter. The smart medical visa has not launched yet, so this guide separates what exists from what is planned.
The Medical Visa Today
- Type: a visit visa, with single or multiple entries.
- Validity: 90 or 180 days.
- Sponsor: a UAE-licensed health facility.
- Companions: the patient’s escorts may also receive visas.
Because the sponsor is the hospital, start with the facility that will treat you and ask its international patient team to handle the visa request.
What Was Agreed on 2 June 2026
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA Dubai) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) signed a strategic memorandum of understanding to build an integrated healthcare journey for visitors who come for treatment and recovery. The most notable planned initiative is a smart medical visa. The two bodies are linking their digital systems so that visa applications, health insurance systems and healthcare providers work together.
The plan aims to support patients from the pre-arrival visa application through treatment and post-operative recovery, with faster electronic approval. Licensed members of the Dubai Health Experience (DXH) network are expected to submit medical visa applications directly for overseas patients.
What Is Not Known Yet
No launch date, fees or application steps for the smart medical visa have been announced. Until they are, keep using the current medical visa route through your hospital.
What to Do Now
- Ask your treating hospital or clinic whether it can sponsor your medical visa.
- Check GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) for the current visa requirements. This is a Dubai programme, not a federal ICP category.
- Check the DHA (dha.gov.ae) to confirm the facility is licensed.
- If someone travels with you, confirm their visa arrangements with the facility.
