How Your MOHRE Job Code Controls Visa Grace Periods and Sponsorship
Why your employment contract’s job code matters for your residency
Your position in a UAE private-sector company is tied to a specific Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) skill level that dictates much more than your corporate title. That single line on your work permit dictates whether you need an attested degree, how long you can legally stay in the country after leaving a job, and whether you can sponsor your family.
MOHRE divides private-sector occupations into nine distinct skill categories:
- Level 1: Legislators, managers, and business executives
- Level 2: Professionals in scientific, technical, and human fields
- Level 3: Technicians in scientific, technical, and humanitarian fields
- Level 4: Clerical support workers
- Level 5: Service and sales workers
- Level 6: Skilled agricultural, forestry, and fishery workers
- Level 7: Craft and related trades workers
- Level 8: Plant and machine operators and assemblers
- Level 9: Elementary occupations
How your skill level shapes your visa status and paperwork
For employees in Levels 1 through 3, holding a diploma, degree, or higher qualification is mandatory. Firose Khan, CEO and Managing Partner of Arabian Business Centre, Amer, notes that skilled occupations require educational certificates to be formally attested by competent authorities before permit processing. Certain specialized roles, including doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers, and legal consultants, must also secure a professional licence from their respective governing bodies.
The benefits of holding a higher classification become immediately obvious during career transitions. Skilled employees enjoy a longer grace period to remain in the UAE after their residence visa is cancelled, giving them more time to secure new employment or finalize their affairs. Higher skill classifications also streamline the process of sponsoring family members, provided the employee meets standard salary thresholds. Muhammad Tariq, Founder and CEO of InZone Group, highlights that degree-holding professionals with specialized certifications may also qualify for long-term residency options like the Golden Visa.
Workers classified under Levels 6 through 9 follow a distinct compliance track. Staff in these lower skill bands must complete a mandatory MOHRE orientation session through Tawjeeh, which covers essential UAE labour laws, worker rights, and contractual obligations.
Employers face equal pressure to ensure titles match commercial reality. Tariq emphasizes that placing staff in the wrong category can stall visa applications, as every designated role must directly align with the company’s licensed commercial activities and available workforce quotas.
How to check your classification and stay compliant
- Review your official UAE labour contract or digital labour card to locate your assigned occupation code.
- Cross-reference your code against MOHRE’s official job descriptions database at www.mohre.gov.ae/en/job-descriptions to verify your required documentation and exact skill tier.
- Complete mandatory Tawjeeh orientation training prior to final visa issuance if your position falls within Levels 6 through 9.
