El Niño Has a 96% Chance of Lasting Till March, What It Means for UAE Rain
Clearing Up the 96% Figure for Winter Weather
If you saw the recent headline about a 96% probability connected to El Niño and assumed downpours were guaranteed for the next five months, the National Centre of Meteorology has stepped in to clarify what that figure actually means.
That 96% figure is the statistical probability that the climate phenomenon itself will persist from November 2026 through March 2027, with potential lingering effects into April, it is not a 96% chance of torrential rain hitting your neighborhood. While the NCM‘s seasonal outlook indicates that temperatures and rainfall across the UAE could be near or above normal during this winter period, a stronger El Niño does not automatically translate to heavy storms on the ground.
How El Niño Reaches the Arabian Peninsula
In an educational update shared on X, an NCM spokesperson explained that El Niño influences weather in the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula indirectly by altering wind patterns and shifting the tracks of low-pressure weather systems.
For actual rain to form, several localized atmospheric conditions must line up simultaneously regardless of El Niño’s strength:
- Moisture Supply: Wind directions must pull sufficient atmospheric moisture from sources like the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean directly into the region.
- System Positioning: Low-pressure tracks need to position themselves over the peninsula to lift that moist air.
- Atmospheric Instability: Local conditions must allow clouds to grow and build the vertical draft needed to trigger rainfall.
