Global filmgoers and racing enthusiasts will see Cruise reprise his role as driver Cole Trickle alongside Hathaway, who joins the cast as a race car team owner and engineer in the duo’s first on-screen collaboration.
Jonathan Levine Directs IMAX-Focused Production Written by Will Staples
Cruise confirmed the project on August 29, 2026, sharing a social media video with Hathaway filmed at Daytona International Speedway alongside a branded race car displaying a summer 2028 release banner. Director Jonathan Levine will direct the feature from a script by Will Staples, while Cruise produces the film together with Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Paramount Pictures is preparing the production for an exclusive theatrical run, with premium format releases planned for IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and 4DX.
The project follows Cruise’s success in resurrecting 1986’s *Top Gun* through the 2022 blockbuster *Top Gun: Maverick*. The original 1990 *Days of Thunder*, directed by Tony Scott and featuring an ensemble cast that included Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, Michael Rooker, and John C. Reilly, earned nearly $158 million worldwide.
