Marco Rubio Rejects Exit Claims and 2028 White House Bid Rumors
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed media reports on Thursday claiming he planned to leave the Trump administration to launch a 2028 presidential campaign, stating it has always been his intention to remain in office until the end of the current term. Political observers and administration officials have monitored the claims as Washington navigates the aftermath of recent midterm election losses.
Rubio told *The New York Times* in an interview that staying until the end of President Donald Trump‘s term has “always been my plan,” adding that he does not understand the origin of the departure rumors.
The denials follow reports by *Bloomberg News* and *The Independent* suggesting Rubio was weighing an early exit or preparing a 2028 Republican presidential nomination bid following midterm setbacks. Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser, declined to answer direct questions about his political future on Thursday, telling reporters he would no longer discuss 2028.
The State Department hit back sharply against the reporting. Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs, called the *Bloomberg* account “totally made up” and dismissed *The Independent*’s report regarding a presidential bid launch as “completely baseless fake news.”
Days before Tuesday’s midterm elections, Rubio made an unusual appearance alongside Trump on the campaign trail, addressing a rally crowd. While Rubio is widely viewed as a potential successor to Trump in the 2028 presidential race, he has previously stated that he would support Vice President JD Vance if Vance pursues the presidency.
