UAE Virtual Work Visa: $3,500 a Month, One Year, No UAE Sponsor

The Virtual Work Visa lets you live in Dubai or another emirate while working remotely for an employer or business based outside the UAE. It is a one-year residence permit and needs no UAE sponsor or local employer. It suits remote employees, freelancers and business owners who want to base themselves in the UAE without changing jobs or setting up a local company.

Who qualifies

The main test is income. You need to show earnings of at least US$3,500 a month (about Dh12,850), or the equivalent in another currency, with a salary certificate. Employees need a valid employment contract of at least 12 months with a company outside the UAE. Freelancers and business owners can qualify with client contracts, proof of company ownership or bank statements showing that income. The visa is open to all nationalities.

Documents you need

• A passport valid for at least six months, and a coloured passport-style photo
• Proof of remote work for an organisation outside the UAE
• A salary certificate showing US$3,500 a month or more (bank statements are also asked for)
• Health insurance valid in the UAE
• A medical fitness test result
• An Emirates ID application receipt

Fees and processing time

GDRFA Dubai lists a residence permit fee of AED 200, plus AED 10 each for the Knowledge and Innovation Dirhams. Applying from inside the country adds an AED 500 status-change fee, and card delivery is AED 20. Medical test, Emirates ID and typing-centre charges come on top. GDRFA says the permit is normally completed within 48 hours once your file is complete. Incomplete applications are returned, and if they are not resubmitted within 30 days they are rejected.

What the visa lets you do, and what it does not

Holders can open bank accounts, rent a home, get utilities and a phone line, and travel in and out of the UAE during validity. You can sponsor your spouse and children, who can enrol in UAE schools, though this needs extra fees and documents. The visa does not allow you to take employment with a UAE-based company. Renewal

GDRFA describes the permit as one year, subject to renewal. When it expires or is cancelled, there is a 60-day grace period to stay in the country.

How to apply

1. Check you meet the income and contract test, and gather your documents.
2. In Dubai, apply through the GDRFA Dubai website or an Amer service centre. In other emirates, apply through the ICP Smart Services portal.
3. If you are abroad when approved, you receive an entry permit by email and have 60 days to enter the UAE.
4. Complete the medical test, biometrics and Emirates ID, then receive your residence permit.
